Description

Barbera d’Alba Superiore Marun 2018 Matteo Correggia

Variety: Barbera 100%

Deep ruby red color, almost impenetrable to light.

The nose is fruity with intense and very fine aromas of cherry and wild berries. Mint, cigar tobacco and vanilla follow.

In the mouth, keeping all the promises made to the nose, it is impressive with a substantial and gratifying balance between hardness and softness. It has elegance and thickness in the sip. The finish is very persistent. In the retro olfaction aromas of ripe fruit and mint arrive.

The Correggia have an excellent declension of Marun. A great Barbera

Marun was the first Barbera to be aged in barrique. Since 1987. Since then the proportions of the woods used have changed, towards a greater balance between dimensions, passages and toasting.

Barbera d’Alba Superiore Marun 2018 Matteo Correggia

The grapes that make up perhaps the most famous Barbera d’Alba come from a single vineyard called Marun in the municipality of Canale.

Soil: has a composition of 64% from fine sand, 4% from coarse sand, 30% from silt and the remaining 2% from clay.

The sun exposure sees an orientation of the vineyard towards the south, while the altitude varies from 290 to 310 meters above sea level.

Training system: it is counter-espalier with guyot pruning.

The oldest part has a traditionally wider sixth of a plant with a distance of 80cm between the plants). To counteract the considerable strength of the soil, and the typical vigor of the Barbera variety, since 2011 they have switched to narrower planting distances, in order to have more vines per hectare. The density therefore increased from 5000 to 8000 plants per hectare. In this way, the individual plants produce fewer but higher quality clusters.

Yield per hectare: it is 45 hectoliters.

The harvest is done manually around the end of September.

Alcoholic fermentation lasts for a period of 8 – 10 days in stainless steel containers.

Refine for at least 15 months, partly in large 30-hectolitre barrels and partly in used barriques. After blending, it rests for at least another 10 months in the bottle.
